Baby Health in Winter What’s Streaming This Month? Lin-Manuel Miranda, Spike Lee, And My Favorite German Time-Travel Mindf**k!

In a weird confluence of programming, we’ve got some soul-balm in the form of a double-dose of Lin-Manuel Miranda this week, ahead of next month’s Hamilton drop on Disney Plus. That, plus a new Spike Lee joint, the direct-to-streaming premiere of Artemis Fowl, a Padma Lakshmi culinary trek, and what Netflix promises is the FINAL SEASON of Fuller House!

Hulu

Before Lin-Manuel Miranda was winning awards for Broadway groundbreakers like In The Heights and Hamilton, he was cutting his improv rap chops with a group called “Freestyle Love Supreme” alongside collaborators Thomas Kail, Christopher Jackson, and Anthony Veneziale. Now Hulu has got a doc about the group, We Are Freestyle Love Supreme, which chronicles their creative journey together from their early days as sidewalk performers in 2005 all the way through their special reunion performances on Broadway last year. (June 5)

Then there’s the very well-timed new food show called Taste The Nation (June 19), where host Padma Lakshmi travels across the country to sample cuisines from the vast array of immigrant groups and explore the influences that have built what we know as American food. Remember: food is political! Also on June 19, Love, Victor is a new tale of high school self-discovery set in the same universe as 2018’s Love, Simon!

Disney Plus

Hey look, it’s Kenneth Branagh’s big-screen adaptation of Artemis Fowl, coming exclusively to Disney instead of theaters so we can all continue justifying that subscription fee! (June 12)

Amazon Prime

There’s not a lot of new originals over on Amazon this month, though they do have the plane hijacking film 7500 starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (June 19) — though be aware that it is NOT the same film as Flight 7500, which is a 2016 horror movie from the director of The Grudge, Takashi Shimizu.

Oh let’s be honest — all we REALLY care about is the fact that Knives Out will be available on June 12!

Apple TV +

The name of the game is “heartwarming” this month over on Ye Olde Apple, as they’ve got two celeb-stuffed originals all about the feels. First up is Dear… (June 5), a docuseries that profiles iconic figures including Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, Spike Lee, Stevie Wonder, Aly Raisman, Misty Copeland, Big Bird, and our second Lin-Manuel Miranda. The conceit, however, is that it uses fan letters written by those who have been influenced by these figures as gateways into their biographies — and that conceit was, itself, inspired by the company’s own “Dear Apple” campaign. Yeeeeahhhhhh.

Then there’s Dads (June 19), a documentary that looks at modern-day parenting through the stories of 6 fathers from around the world — as well as testimonials from celebrities like Judd Apatow, Neil Patrick Harris, Ken Jeong, Jimmy Kimmel, Hasan Minhaj, Conan O’Brien, Patton Oswalt, and Will Smith. The film is the feature directorial debut of Bryce Dallas Howard, who also looks at the dads in her own life, including interviews with her late grandfather Rance, her father Ron and her brother Reed.

Netflix

It’s a good month to watch Netflix if you like endings, as a they’ve got a lot of series that are launching their final seasons, from Fuller House (June 2) to 13 Reasons Why (June 5) to my personal favorite TV obsession, the German time-traveling I’m-my-own-grandpa show Dark (June 27). If you’ve never seen the show before, you’ve got time to catch up on the previous two seasons! And if you ARE all caught up… face it, you probably don’t remember what happened and you’ll need to rewatch seasons 1 & 2 anyway.

Other returning hits this month include Ryan Murphy’s The Politician (June 19) and the supernatural drama The Order (June 18), as well as Queer Eye (June 5) and Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (June 7).

Then there’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (June 26), a spoof of the famous music competition starring Will Farrell and Rachel McAdams. Go ahead, wrap your head around this one:

And finally, Spike Lee’s latest movie is heading straight to Netflix: Da 5 Bloods (June 12) is the story of four African-American veterans — Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) — who return to Vietnam to look for the remains of their squad leader (Chadwick Boseman)… and also maybe treasure!
